Reykjavik, home of the Vikings

Sorry for delay. We had to go back to Germany for some days. Bernd felt so homesick in Paris, so we decided to go back to Erfurt for some days and meet some friends. Also we got in France the idea to change our route and fly to Iceland, so for sure we would need some warmer clothes.
Our journey to get to Iceland took much longer as planned, we a small delay of about two hours. So we arrived late at night or say in the early morning at our hostel. That could not stop us from getting up in the morning and going into the centre of Reykjavik and explore the city.
We started our exploration near our hostel at Perlan, in there is the Saga Museum about the Vikings and their culture. Unfortunately the museum wasn't open, so we decided to get there again and take a tour. On top of the building we got a great view above Reykjavik. The first good view we got above this city and the landscape around it.

After a longer while we went down the hill and headed down to the harbour. To get there we had to pass by at the runway of the airport, just the moment we passed by at the runway we got struck by Murphy's law. A plane came down and was only a few metres above our heads. Bernd couldn't make any move, he stood there like a deer looking into the light of a car. He was not able to move until we could not hear the plane anymore. At the harbour we stopped to get a breakfast and take a look at the Atlantic ocean, the other end of Reykjavik, some islands and the mountains in the north.

Next to the harbour we took a look inside the Harpa, the conference and concert centre and went to some older parts of their city and the town hall. Inside the town hall was a big 3D map of Iceland giving a better feeling about the different places.

Again we went to the water to see the Viking ship, not a real ship built out of wood, but it was still interesting and worth seeing it, especially because it's located at place also offering a great view.

After all the time we spent churches in Italy and France we thought it might be worth checking out the cathedral in Reykjavik. It's a lot different, from the outside it already doesn't really have the typical form of a church and it's completely white. Inside and outside. No decorations at all.

The evening we went to a bar in town to get to the couchsurfer meeting. There was a big mixture of people from different countries, but only one guy from Iceland, the others were travelers or people doing some work and travel. Bernd also found a friend there, a snowman who is traveling around with a guy from Brazil.
