Southbound and the Blue Lagoon

On our next trip with the car Troy from Australia joined us, Fillipe also planned to join us but he was so exhausted that he couldn't travel with us. Too bad, he would have loved the trip and the places we got to.
Finding the way was pretty easy, there is only on highway leading down and to every place we wanted to go to.
First we made a little breakfast stop on top of a hill in the middle of nowhere getting a great view.

It take not long to get to the first announced sight, the Seljalandsfoss  waterfall with a height of about 60 metres. The waterfall is much different to the Gullfoss and you are able to walk behind the waterfall, like the Gullfoss we got a shower when we passed the waterfalls mist.

Might seem that we were on a waterfall tour cause our next stop also was on a waterfall, named Skógafoss. But not offering a way around, therefore we could climb up some stair. On half the way we went along a path to take a closer look and saw a green face looking at the waterfall, Bernd thought it might be the face of a Troll and ran away.

On top of the stairs we got a good view above the waterfall and also the land around. From there was a easy path leading up into the mountains, inviting us to follow it, it would have been too much walking, especially cause our destination for the day trip was to far away to spent here too much time, so we got back on the road. And thinking of getting here on our next trip to Iceland.

There is a story about a hidden treasure behind the waterfall and people trying to reach the treasure, but they all failed. For sure they had to fail, because the treasure is not hidden behind the waterfall it's in the river in front of it.
In Vik, the town Troy was going to stay the next weeks we picked up two guys from England, who needed a ride to Skaftafell , so we got more company. The landscape we were driving through let us feel like we were not on earth anymore. A rocky area covered with moss, desert with black sand and again piles of stones as far as you can see.

The hitchhikers left at a camping ground near a glacier, to not only see the glacier from far away we got a lot closer to one of them and walking closer. As we got there we were thinking about travellers telling the guide or Icelandic people that they should clean it up, cause it's so dirty. Not from human trash, only the stuff the glacier took with him down the mountain. Did not see someone saying that, but kept the thought in mind.
Before we got to Vatnajökull we've got a small information about the glaciers with some pictures and for sure some very expensive tours. One of this pictures showed a glacier and a group of people walking on it. It looked so unreal with the color and hard to belief that it would in nature look like that, but nature showed us that it was real, by random  we decided to go to the glacier where they took the picture.
Our final destination of the day Jökulsárlón (floating icebergs) was a long time of driving away from the glaciers and it felt like we never make it to get there, especially cause of the straight leading roads that seem never to end. Finally we got there and could take a look at them. Wow, what an amazing place. The weather also got better, the sun was shining all the time so we did not get frozen from the cold wind.

We stayed a long time at the floating icebergs before wee got back in the car and on our way back to Vik, a long long way to go. At the way back we enjoyed the view on the places were we stopped on our way down. When we got closer to Vik I could see the place Fillipe was talking about, he called it gate of hell the real name is Reynisdrangar, so our last big sight of the day changed to this amazing high rocks staying in the Atlantic.
On our last day we decided to make something special and worth spending some money. First we sold our return ticket to the airport to some other travelers and booked a bus tour to the blue lagoon and the airport. It was absolutely worth getting to the blue lagoon, relaxing in the naturally warm sea water mixed with minerals. A beautiful place and a good idea for finishing your journey in Iceland. Also Bernd enjoyed it there a lot, it was so funny when he felt into the pot of Silica, which is supposed to put on the face and clean the skin. Bernd was not that amused, after getting it off his body he did not try again and went to the steam bath.
